Visible Light Detectors for Laser Radar and Photon Counting

We group UV and near-IR detectors specifically marketed for laser radar and single photon counting applications together with visible detectors (400-700nm) for purposes of this discussion.

For wavelengths from 180 nm to 1100 nm (0.2 to 1.1 microns)

  • Laser Radar Detectors: For 180 to 650 nm we offer miniature PMTs selected for high quantum efficiency and low dark current suitable for both analog use and photon counting.  These are packaged in modules with HV supply.  The assembly includes overvoltage protection so that the tube will not be damaged by exposure to bright light.
  • For <650 to 1064 nm we also offer Silicon Avalanche APDs on TE coolers also specially packaged with front end electronics for Laser Radar.  Additionally, APDs for the 400 to 1100 nm range are now available. These  devices  are both manufactured by Licel GbR in Berlin.
  • Our best candidate detector for wavelengths longer than 1100 nm but less than 1500 nm is the photovoltaic PD-10.6 series or   PEM-L series, but these are probably only reasonable to use if you already own one which you use for longer wavelengths. The PEM-L-series is fast and convenient but also much less sensitive than competing devices such as Ge or InGaAs..

Competing technologies (detector materials) for these wavelengths include germanium and indium gallium arsenide (Ge & InGaAs) photodiodes. If you need to see only these wavelengths and do not already own the detector, you should probably buy one of these rather than one of ours.
